the kids and i made valentines the other day for their parents. they were so careful to glue this little piece of ribbon here and color this heart there. i started to think about how much fun the tradition of homemade valentines is. what a sweet idea to have children bring valentines to the entire classroom, not just to their best friends. i loved getting valentines as a child. and you better believe i was especially thrilled to receive them from the five boys i liked and to read what they wrote. (usually nothing).

long live the simple traditions that make our daily life just that much sweeter.

oh the beatles.

how i revere the beatles.

any day. any time. no matter how crappy i feel.

those boys come on and i will rock. and that frown will turn upside down.

saying they are my favorite is an extreme understatement.

so you can imagine how thrilled i was to hear paul maccartney was awarded a walk of fame star in hollywood today.

he deserved it years ago alongside his fellow bandmates.

now the rockers are happily starring the walk of fame alongside one another as they should be.

horray for these amazing men.

oh i love them.

the husband and i have both been sick for the past few days.

i got the stomach flu from my little niece and nephews in idaho

along with a fabulously wet runny nose.

he has a relentless cough that keeps the both of us up all night long

coupled with a swollen sore throat.

i went to boise for the weekend to visit my sister and her

five darling children

for my little nieces first birthday.

our weekend was full of

one cute throwing up three year old at toys r us

checking out boises new aquarium and all its amazing little creatures

more throwing up children

birthday parties lots of games and lots of love.

and i loved every second of it.

i went by myself this trip. husband couldnt get work off.

five and a half hours is a long drive flying solo.

good thing i had garth brooks regina spektor and the beatles to keep me company on pandora.

however i do believe long drives for one are pretty good for the soul.

pre marriage i used to do them often to visit siblings/parents.

the thoughts, the quiet peaceful time.

you dont usually make time in your day for that.

i appreciate that about a good party for one roadie.

uggggh. the death of me.

i never like my hair. no matter what i do.

it all started when i chopped it all off in 2004 and had a pixie cut.

what i was thinking?? no clue.

i had long blonde hair my whole life. then my sis in law dyed my bangs purple. for whatever reason.

and i couldnt handle it one bit. so i chopped it all off.

so gross.

{when i hit 18 my hair started to turn dark and i had just been

dying it anyways to keep it blonde. }

in an effort to help the short haired ugly situaiton i decided to go dark.

sure didnt help a thing. so i went back to blonde.

and its all been downhill from there.

back and forth blonde to brown.

been growing my hair out ever since.

finally i stuck with dark in 2007 and havent cut it ever since.

now.

im getting a little stir crazy.

and sick of the same ole.

scared to death to change it. but im so bored with this stupid hair.

really makes me want to do something

our great friends jake and mack are of serbian descent and being such, celebrate serbian christmas. we love to celebrate with them
(although jake was gone this year, we missed you!)

it is a fun serbian tradition to make pogocha bread and for everyone to grab a part of the loaf- and on the count of 3- pull. if you get the lucky token in your piece of the bread- you shall have luck all through the year!!

(hopefully i am telling the tale correctly and am not giving shame to the serbian culture.)

im always so sad to leave home after the holidays;

but this year it helped a little

knowing my sister and her family would be in utah waiting for us when we got back.

they came to see the four of us and our families

who live here since they didnt come to my parents in california.

i can never get enough of her five darling children.

we all stayed at my sisters in riverton, {thank you for being such gracious hosts em mike and bailey}

for new years weekend and rang it in with style.

including a fondue party, homemade {better than} krispy kreme donuts, our very own gigantic firework display, sparkler mania, rock band all night, pretending we were in new york with ryan seacrest, and a toast to the new year!!

hope you enjoyed your new years as well!!

*i may or may not have been the only one in my pjs all night. how else can you stay up till 2am??

after sharing all our san francisco and christmas eve and christmas pictures

these are the remaining highlights of our trip.

going on a hike to lake clementine and mountain biking in the beautiful sunset; bowling per jamisons {age 3} request...his first time! and hitting the local party stop for arcade games, mini golf, laser tag and go karts. {where sadly my phone flew out of my pocket- got run over by a few go karters and cracked.}

of course,

my favorite is just laying around the house in sweats

playing with all the wee ones and watching endless movies.

not to mention all the movies we went out to.

our family sure loves movies, and i am not one to argue with that.

the more movies the merrier.

we have spent the last week at

my parents home

in california

for christmas.

it has been a little

bit of heaven on earth.

all of my siblings

but two

{who have been sorely missed}

with their spouses and children were home as well.

i have many pictures of our advertures over the week to share,

but for now here is a peek into our christmas eve and christmas day celebrations.

i am so grateful for

my savior

jesus christ

and for his birth

especially this time of year.

i am grateful for the knoweldge i have that he lives.

our great friends kristan and joel held a fabulous ugly sweater/half-of-us-didnt-get-the-ugly-sweater-memo party the night before we left to come home for the holidays.
it was so much fun to get together with all of our favorites.
especially because we hadnt seen almost everyone in at least a year.
because we are now all spread out across the country.
these are all my besties
from utah state- back in the golden days.
it is nothing short of pure delight when we all get together.
as if no time has gone by at all.
we had a suprise baby shower for baby bowen and
a wonderful round of white elephant gifts.
i love to think that we have been bffs for eight years.
although it ages us.
i love every second of it.

night last week we went out and

got my favorite thing in our house.

our christmas tree.

i am honestly obsessed with it.

i turn off all the lights and just sit on the coach and stare at it.

there is something so magical about a christmas tree...

reminds me of everything good about christmas.

especially

reminds me of my childhood home.

*speaking of childhood home, my father was always very particular about the way he put the lights on the tree. a few of us kids would help him put the lights on. apparently this particularity carried over. i had the hardest time letting go and allowing jacob to put the lights on the way he wanted to. {which was so different than i always did} in talking to two of my sisters they are totally compulsive in the way they do their trees as well! their husbands give up and have appointed tree duty to them!!! i love it. family traditions at christmas time...even the crazy ones...

i swear it has been the story of my life this week.
i nanny for a family of four children.
ages two-nine.
they are wonderful...yet quite the handful.
the parents were out of town this week
and i temporarily took their place.
hats off to parents. especially to those of multiple children.
sometimes i just dont know how you do it.
and keep your sanity.

birthday boy aaron. i hate white creamy things.

my sister in law is very thoughtful.

husband grew a thanksgiving beard.

saturday night he shaved it

off. with the encouragement of

his brothers he

shaved a disgusting chinstrap.

{he attempted a christmas tree in the goatee

but it didnt go over very well.

neither did the chinstrap.

time with my sisters family

who also lives here.

it has been so much fun already.

she hopes she covered up her poison oak{? or ivy? which one claire? i cant remember}

well enough with her coverup and foundation.

what?? she wore make up?? wow. she must be really cool.

i gotta be friends with her.

now more thirteen years later,

i look back and still think,

man she is really cool.

and i always gotta be friends with her.

you can imagine how excited and happy i was for her when she met the man of her dreams

and got engaged...

our first day in new york was spent

in times square

it did not disappoint.

i was so grateful for my trusty rainbows

by the end of three days touring dc.

we took the place by storm.

hitting up every possible museum and monument.

the husband had never been before

and was like a child in a candy store,

so excited at the sight of every building.

"which one is that???"

"ohhh, look at that!!"

my brother and his family got to join us on our site seeing,

which just added to all the fun.

washington dc is a

gorgeous city and it comes highly recommended from the

two of us over here.

dc has the yummiest food.

i am definitely one who loves to eat out, so a city full of delicious restuarnts is a city i love.

i received fabulous recommendations for places to eat and i was excited to try them out. my favorite places were 7th hill pizza, blueberry whole wheat pancakes at the eastern market, and a tiny little macaroon shop on the hill that had every single kind of macaroon you can imagine...including sweet potato...{ pictured above}

the husband and i just returned from a week long trip back east.

we visited my brother and his darling little family

{as well as one million monuments and the best gelato i have ever had...

in washington dc and then headed over to new york city.

ahhh how i love new york city.

we could land in manhattan come next fall!

the rooftop concert series

and it is the best venue ever.

sam and jenna

just moved to denver

as sam joined the army for medical school

and started classes a few weeks ago.

it was only fitting to

set off fireworks, have a water balloon toss and bbq it up

in their honor.

jacob went to college with all of his

best friends from high school.

the twelve of them have been roommates and buds through it all.

over the past year the numbers have begun to dwindle as the boys have gotten married off and moved away to pursue carriers.

this summer killed off a few more

and it is sad to see them go

but exciting to see where the future takes everyone.
